The girl in the middle is an eerie doctrine. This is an inside joke, one that you probably wouldn't get unless you were in law school (well, at least I hope not). It's a joke about the Erie Doctrine, which was derived from a court decision in 1938 that the courts have made needlessly complicated, so much so that it is just scary.
